Drive Force Transmission
Wedge packages form part of elastic coupling arrangements in railway drivetrains. Their primary function is to transfer drive forces through the coupling to the wheelset axle.
The individual wedge elements operate together as a coordinated package. This allows the required transmission capability to be integrated into a compact coupling structure.
Wedge packages combine high power density with compact dimensions, making them suitable for railway drive systems with limited installation space.
In advanced project-specific designs, optimised element geometry and fastening arrangements can reduce the number of individual wedge elements required. Depending on the coupling concept, this can provide advantages during assembly, handling and maintenance.
Key Technical Benefits
- transmission of drive forces to the wheelset axle;
- high power density within a compact design;
- elastic force transmission within the drivetrain;
- efficient use of restricted installation space;
- project-specific arrangement of the wedge elements;
- adaptable geometry and fastening configuration;
- potential assembly and handling advantages in optimised designs;
- suitability for repeated operating loads in railway drive systems.
Applications in Railway Drive Systems
Wedge packages are used in elastic coupling systems within railway and urban rail drivetrains.
They can be supplied for drivetrain maintenance, coupling overhaul, fleet refurbishment, vehicle modernisation and new rolling stock projects.
Replacement solutions for existing coupling systems can also be technically evaluated where the original components are discontinued or no longer commercially available.
Project-Specific Manufacturing
The geometry, number and arrangement of the wedge elements are developed according to the intended coupling configuration, available installation space and required power-transmission function.
Project-specific versions can be evaluated based on an existing technical drawing, original component or assembly, physical sample or defined customer specification.
Each application is technically reviewed and calculated individually before production.
German Production and Quality Control
Wedge packages are manufactured in Germany under quality management systems certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 22163.
Product-specific verification focuses on the geometry and arrangement of the individual wedge elements and the agreed drive-force and torque-transmission characteristics. Depending on the coupling design, dynamic or service-life validation may also form part of the project requirements.
The finished products are supplied with an EN 10204 3.1 inspection certificate.
